ChatGPT vs. Claude vs. Microsoft Copilot: Which Is Right for Your Business?
This is one of the most common questions we are asked, and it is usually phrased as “which one is best?” That framing is the problem. All three platforms are capable. They are built for somewhat different environments, and the right answer depends far more on your business than on any benchmark.
What follows is how we actually evaluate them for clients: start from the work, then the data and security, then the environment, then the platform.
Quick Answer
ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft Copilot can all be useful business AI platforms, but they fit different workflows and technology environments. Microsoft Copilot may be especially relevant inside Microsoft 365 workflows, while ChatGPT and Claude may fit other research, drafting, analysis or custom workflow needs. Many organizations may use more than one platform.
The best platform depends on the business process, data, security requirements, integration needs, users and cost — not on which model scores highest on a public benchmark.
What Are ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft Copilot?
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s assistant, available to individuals and, through ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise plans, to organizations with administrative controls. OpenAI also offers an API platform for building custom applications.
Claude is Anthropic’s assistant, offered to individuals on Free, Pro and Max plans and to organizations on Team and Enterprise plans, alongside an API platform for custom development.
Microsoft 365 Copilot is Microsoft’s AI assistance layer inside Microsoft 365 — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams and Outlook — with related tooling in Copilot Studio and Power Automate for custom agents and automation.
The Most Important Question: What Are You Trying to Accomplish?
Platform comparisons tend to skip this, and it is the step that determines whether the project succeeds.
A firm whose real problem is that proposals take nine days to assemble has a different requirement from one whose problem is that nobody can find anything in fifteen years of SharePoint. The first is a drafting and knowledge-assembly problem. The second is an information architecture problem that AI will expose rather than solve.
Define the workflow, the people in it, the information it depends on and what “better” would look like. Then the platform question usually narrows on its own.
ChatGPT for Business
ChatGPT is a strong general-purpose choice: drafting, research, summarization, analysis, and building custom assistants for specific internal tasks. Its API platform is mature, which matters if you expect to embed AI into your own applications or workflows.
On business plans, OpenAI states that it does not train its models on business customer data by default, that customers retain rights to their inputs and own their outputs, and that administrative capabilities include SAML single sign-on, admin control over data retention, and an Enterprise Compliance API providing audit logs. Specific features vary by plan.
It is a practical fit for mixed technology environments, for organizations that are not Microsoft-centric, and for teams that want one broadly capable assistant plus room to build.
Claude for Business
Claude is frequently chosen for document-heavy and analytical work — reviewing long contracts, synthesizing research, working through detailed material and drafting substantial written output. Like ChatGPT it offers an API for custom workflows.
Anthropic states that prompts, data and results are not used to train its models by default. The Team plan adds central billing and administration, single sign-on, admin controls for connectors and organization-wide search; the Enterprise plan adds role-based access with fine-grained permissioning, SCIM provisioning, audit logs and a Compliance API, custom data retention, and IP allowlisting, with a HIPAA-ready offering available.
It suits professional services, analytical teams and any organization where a large share of the work is reading, reasoning about and producing documents.
Microsoft Copilot for Business
Microsoft 365 Copilot is different in kind from the other two: it is designed to work where your business content already is.
Its licensing has more nuance than most buyers expect, and this is the single most common source of disappointment we see. Copilot Chat and the basic Microsoft 365 Copilot experience work primarily from web data and only reach organizational content when a user manually supplies it — they do not automatically query Microsoft Graph. The premium add-on licence is what enables automatic grounding in organizational data through Microsoft Graph and Work IQ. If a business licenses the wrong tier and expects Copilot to answer questions about its own SharePoint content, it will conclude the product does not work.
Copilot also inherits your environment’s condition. Because it respects each user’s existing permissions, it will surface whatever a user already had access to — which is excellent security design and an uncomfortable audit if permissions have drifted. Identity, permissions, SharePoint hygiene and Microsoft 365 governance therefore determine Copilot readiness more than any model capability does.
How the Platforms Differ
The table below summarizes how we compare them. It deliberately has no “winner” column, because the same row can favour different platforms at different companies. Capabilities also vary by subscription and edition, so treat this as an evaluation framework rather than a specification sheet.

How Security and Data Governance Affect the Choice
For most organizations, governance narrows the field faster than features do.
The questions that matter: which information may be entered into an AI tool at all; who administers the platform and can remove a departing employee’s access; how long conversations are retained and who controls that; whether you need audit logs, and in what form; whether you have regulatory or contractual obligations that require specific terms; and what happens to integrations and connectors your users may enable.
All three vendors publish enterprise data commitments, and all three state that business customer data is not used for model training by default. They do not offer identical control sets, and the details differ by plan. Where a requirement is contractual or regulatory, verify it against the vendor’s current documentation and terms rather than a summary — including this one.
Personal Accounts vs. Business Accounts
The Account Type Matters
Consumer and personal accounts should not be treated as interchangeable with business or enterprise offerings. This is the most frequent governance gap we find, and it is usually invisible until someone looks.
Before treating any AI platform as approved, evaluate account ownership, administrative control, authentication, user provisioning and offboarding, data controls, retention, integrations, audit and admin capability, and the contractual terms that apply. An employee using a personal subscription for company work sits outside every one of those controls, regardless of how capable the underlying model is.
This is a central part of AI governance and managed AI, and one of the first things an AI readiness assessment establishes.
Integration With Existing Business Systems
Integration is where theoretical capability meets practical value. Microsoft Copilot’s advantage is that it already sits inside the applications where work happens. ChatGPT and Claude reach business systems through connectors and their APIs, which is more flexible and more work.
If the goal is AI embedded in a specific business process — not just an assistant people visit — the integration path matters more than the model. That is the territory of AI workflow automation and agents.
Do We Have to Pick Only One?
When More Than One AI Platform Makes Sense
Sometimes, no. A firm might run Microsoft 365 Copilot for everyday document and email work while a specific team uses Claude or ChatGPT for heavy analysis or a custom workflow. That is a legitimate architecture when each platform is earning its place.
When Standardizing on Fewer Tools Is Better
More often, tool sprawl is the real risk. Every additional platform adds licensing, administration, another set of data controls, more training, and more places for sensitive information to go. Duplicate capability that nobody asked for is cost without benefit.
The principle we apply: use the fewest platforms that effectively support the required business workflows. Not the fewest possible — the fewest that actually do the job.
How Innovative Evaluates AI Platforms
We work through the business requirement, the technology environment, security and data constraints, integration needs, the users who will actually do the work, and total cost against expected value. Only then do we recommend a platform, and sometimes the recommendation is to fix something else first.

Is it safe to put company information into these tools?
It depends on the account and plan. All three vendors state that business customer data is not used to train their models by default, but those commitments apply to business and enterprise offerings rather than personal accounts. Decide what information is permitted, on which approved tools, and review the vendor terms that apply to your plan.
Do we need Microsoft 365 Copilot if we already use ChatGPT or Claude?
Not necessarily. Copilot’s distinct advantage is working directly inside your Microsoft 365 content and respecting existing permissions. If that is where the work happens, it may be worth licensing alongside another platform; if not, it may be redundant.
Why did Microsoft Copilot not answer questions about our own documents?
Most often, licence tier. The basic Copilot experiences work primarily from web data and only use organizational content a user supplies manually; automatic grounding in your Microsoft 365 data through Microsoft Graph requires the premium add-on licence. Poor SharePoint organization and permission drift also reduce answer quality.
Can we use more than one AI platform?
